Why I put a coin in the freezer every time I leave home for more than a day
A good friend of mine lives in another country where literally everyone uses this method – when they leave, they leave coins in their freezers.
All of Europe always puts a coin in the freezer when they are away from home for a long time. This is the simplest and absolutely brilliant invention. By the way, it is even a little surprising that the innovators in this matter are residents of Western countries, and not our native country.
You see, by the coin it is easy to understand whether the electricity was turned off at home (and even for how long) on the days when you were away.
When I need to leave home (to the country, on a business trip, on vacation) for more than a week, I turn off everything except the refrigerator, because it is never empty. I use the coin method to make sure that the food I left behind has not spoiled due to long or frequent power outages.
I take any deep container, fill it with water and freeze it. I put the “patch” on top and put everything back in the freezer.
When I arrive, I look in there and decide whether I can have a snack after the road or whether I should go to the store for fresh food. The coin is still there – everything in the refrigerator can be safely eaten.
Is it a little sunken in the ice? The “light” was turned off, but not for long.
Has it sunk to the very bottom? The electricity was turned off either repeatedly or once, but for a very long time. The food in the refrigerator has become unfit for consumption, there is a risk of poisoning. It’s time to go shopping.
