How to stop being afraid of Mondays: 3 reasons for anxiety and 3 solutions to the problem
We all know the famous saying “Monday is a hard day.” Many are so afraid of the beginning of the week that they begin to hate it. Today we will figure out whether the devil is as terrible as he is painted and how to get rid of panic.
For some people, Sunday evening feels like August 31 for schoolchildren. And most often this is associated, of course, with work. Have you ever noticed that you try to prolong Sunday in different ways? And as soon as the hands on the clock approach 21:00, your mood deteriorates, the brain refuses to accept reality. If you realized that this is about you, we suggest that together with the psychologist of the Pogovorim.online platform Alexander Sedov, you figure out what it is, what it can be connected with and, most importantly, how to change this situation.
To begin with, we suggest answering a couple of simple questions that will help to identify the “disease” by the “symptoms”.
Analyze your typical week: what do you do besides work? How do you recover and relax? Do other areas of your life (family, close relationships, health) suffer because of your workload?
What exactly do you dislike about your job: the field of activity, position, organization, working conditions, income, management, team or clients? The answer “everything” will not help much. Try to detail and notice what exactly does not suit you first.
Using three examples, we offer you to analyze the most typical situations and scenarios for getting out of them.
Situation No. 1
Vasya dreamed of being a biologist all his life. In his 2nd year, he got a job in the sales department, everything was going well, and by the end of his studies he had become one of the best salespeople. The young man decided that he would pay off the car loan and go to work in his specialty, but soon he met the girl of his dreams, and they began to think about a wedding and a mortgage (read also: How to quickly pay off a mortgage: 5 tricks that only financial experts know about). It would seem that everything is going as one could only dream of, but every night Vasya is tormented by questions about whether what he is doing makes sense.
The reason in this example is quite obvious: our hero does not like the field in which he works, but it brings in more income than the profession of a biologist.
How do you understand that this is your case?
Ask yourself what you feel about the work itself? Not about the team or the boss, but about the type of activity. The answers may be as follows: boredom, irritation, even hatred and disgust. And an additional check: if you moved to another organization for the same position, would the situation change dramatically?
What to do?
The most important step is to take responsibility and admit that this is my choice. Psychological defenses may be activated here. “I have no choice. I have to earn a lot. I have a family, a loan, a mortgage and 3 dogs.” If you reason from the position that “I have to”, then the feeling of freedom is lost and unnecessary tension appears. Instead, I suggest finishing the sentence: “I chose this because…”. I will explain in more detail later.
Build a hierarchy of your values and needs. What is most important to me during this period? What is secondary? What can I give up? Perhaps what I am doing now was important before, but the situation has changed, and I am acting in the old way.
For example, if family is now in first place for Vasya, he will say: “I am choosing to work in sales for 3 years because I want to provide for my family. It is more important to me now than professional self-realization. Here Nietzsche’s phrase comes to mind: “If you know why, you can endure any how.”
Situation No. 2
Marina has been working as a designer since she was 16 and now works in a large studio. Her colleagues love and appreciate her very much, and her performance indicators are simply off the charts. During lunch, she manages to give them ideas, help with project design, creating layouts and selecting fonts: in a whole day, the girl manages to do 1.5 times more than other team members. Clients love her for the endless number of edits and impeccable politeness and openness. The manager is delighted with her and has been making Marina the employee of the month for six months now and giving her a bonus 10% higher than the others. The woman also makes logos and websites for friends and relatives. And all this for the sake of a crystal reputation, which should help in the future (read also: Forget about them: 5 phrases that belittle you in the eyes of others – do you say them?).
