How to be healthy and happy: advice from a Tibetan doctor

Why you should eat at certain intervals, how being laconic affects your condition, and why you should observe seasonality in the sexual sphere – we will tell you about the main principles of a long and happy life from the point of view of Tibetan medicine.

Tibetan medicine is one of the most ancient in the world. Over time, it has borrowed something from Hinduism, Ayurveda and Chinese traditional medicine. And although it arose before Buddhism, Tibetan doctors often apply the principles of Buddhist philosophy. For example, when Tibetans treat addictions, they constantly tell the patient about the importance and brevity of life, about how difficult it is to receive a human incarnation in the process of reincarnation, about the fact that by changing our lives, we change the lives of other people.

The world-famous Tibetan medicine doctor Phuntsog Wangmo shared her postulates of a harmonious life with Marie Claire.

Tibetan medicine: practices, techniques, advice, nutrition rules
1. Train yourself to treat food correctly
In general, the meaning of life is in food ─ in the literal sense. During digestion of food, the so-called “pure” substance is separated from the “impure” one — the clear juice is separated from the cloudy sediment, which forms excrement in the small intestine. Clear juice from the stomach and intestines enters the liver, where it is also divided into clean and impure parts: the clean part turns into blood, and the sediment forms gastric mucus. Then the clean part of the blood forms muscles, and the impure part becomes bile.

Fat is formed from the clear juice of the muscles, which protects the body from the cold, and the impure part of the muscles forms the secretions of the nine openings of the body. The clear juice of fat forms bones and cartilage, and the impure part forms lymph nodes and fatty secretions. The pure part of the bones forms the bone, brain and spinal marrow, and the sediment grows in the form of teeth, nails and hair. The pure part of the bone marrow forms semen, and the impure part turns into various lubricants of the body. Finally, the impure part of the semen participates in the formation of sperm, and the pure part becomes an immaterial substance, the color of life – this is the basis of vitality, beauty and longevity.

2. Combine products correctly
Tibetans are very sensitive to the combination of products. Incompatible products are eggs and fish, eggs with any dairy products, fish with milk or brown sugar and lentils. It is useful to drink a glass of warm boiled water on an empty stomach (the main thing is to always drink fresh, not yesterday’s boiled water!). In the morning, it is better to eat warm food (porridge, whole grain bread), for lunch – meat, for dinner – something light, for example, stewed vegetables. Move after dinner, in no case go to bed right away (and if you go to bed on a full stomach, sleep on your right side – this will help the food to be digested).

3. Eat at intervals of at least four hours
Otherwise, you are deceiving the body: it begins to digest new food, leaving the old one. This is how “mashupa” occurs, which means “indigestion”, and toxins are formed. If you want a snack, it is better to drink tea or water, but do not eat solid food. Our stomach has four “pockets”. Two should be filled with food, one – with liquid, and the remaining one is used to mix and digest food. It is important to adhere to these proportions and not overeat – part of the stomach should remain empty so that there is energy to digest everything well. First, you need to eat food that is digested faster, and then heavier food. Therefore, it is ideal to eat fruit half an hour before a heavy meal, otherwise the stomach will begin to rot and gases and toxins will form.

4. Remember that fasting is harmful
We believe that this way you lose strength. But sometimes you can – only while you are young and not more often than one or two days. You need to enter into fasting gradually, as well as exit, giving preference to soft, warm, oily food. Sitting on juices and fruits is bad, especially for people of Mucus and Wind. This reduces the digestive fire and body heat – especially in the cold season (it is better to eat a lot of fruit in the summer and early autumn). And, as I already said, we do not welcome vegetarianism, as well as dietary supplements.
